Not much here yet. I am not amused by fighting between formats, firewalls, and bandwidth. When it works it is great; when it doesn't it ain't much fun.
Nov 2005: IU School of Music has a considerable number of music scores and operatic librettos with piano accompaniment online. Great way to follow along to the great music. Check it out at http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/variations/scores/aek3910/index1.html.
Dec 2004: I just ordered my first subscription to XM radio. So far, it works great and was very handy for my long trip across the eastern US. The music selection is pretty diverse and the quality overall is quite good. I particularly like the feature that shows the artist and song that is currently playing. Great way to experiment with a number of genres before investing in buying CDs.
There is also another service, Sirius, which I considered. I chose XM because they will be broadcasting MLBaseball games in 2005 so we can listen to the Cardinals. Sirius has more NPR, but I can get that directly in NYC no problem. XM is also slightly less expensive right now.
Some sites I have enjoyed:
www.onlineclassics.net -- It's now a paysite - might be worth it. Update 09/02 -- DO NOT USE THIS SITE -- they will keep charging you forever. Now disputing with the credit card company. Update 02/03 -- maybe the dispute is resolved but still not sure. Definitely do not use this site.
How about the 100 Greatest Country Music Songs of all time? I unapologeticallly do love good country music. They are missing what I think is the best country music song of all time however -- that is, You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma, plus the self-proclaimed greatest country and western song, David Allan Coe’s You Never Even Called Me By My Name.
Ah well, it’s still a good list. They do have Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, Waylon and Willie on Mamma, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys, Lorrie Morgan’s Something in Red, which is such a sweet but sappy song it’s irresistable, and Passionate Kisses by Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Now how much more eclectic can one country music fan get?
